Merkel welcomes the Egyptian initiative to solve the crisis in Libya

German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed, on Monday, the initiative announced by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, recently, to end the crisis in Libya.

Merkel's position came during phone discussions with Sisi, on the developments of the Libyan crisis in light of the "Cairo Declaration", which received wide Arab and international support.

Merkel considered the "Cairo Declaration" as an extension of the course of the Berlin Conference, by adding effective new elements and dimensions to the Libyan political process and praised the Egyptian constructive efforts to settle the Libyan crisis.

Al-Sisi stressed Egypt's keenness to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Libya, through what was stipulated in the initiative, in pursuit of stability and security in Libya, preserving the capabilities of the Libyan people and activating their free will, and putting an end to illegal foreign interventions that "the issue only increased exacerbation and violence."

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during phone conversations with Sisi, praised the Egyptian diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis in Libya.

The Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, announced a comprehensive political initiative to resolve the conflict in Libya, and said in a joint press conference with the leader of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Hifter, and Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Aqila Saleh, in Cairo, that "the initiative calls for a halt Shooting from Monday, 8 June. "
