U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States will send $100 million in medical supplies to Italy to help the country with the highest number of deaths from Coved-19 to deal with the epidemic.

During his daily press conference on his administration's efforts to combat the new Coronavirus outbreak, Trump said he spoke by phone with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and told him that "we have a surplus of materials that we don't need, and we're going to spend about $100 million worth of Surgical, medical and hospital supplies."

The Italian prime minister was "very, very happy" with the news, the President told reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House.

"We will also send other things that we don't need elsewhere," he said.

Trump said u.S. artificial insemination production will rise strongly as more than 10 manufacturers rush, promising to export any surplus to Europe, which it desperately lacks.

"Once our production (of ventilators) exceeds our need, we will send it to Italy, we will send it to France, we will send it to Spain, where they face terrible problems, and to other countries if possible," he said.

The announcement comes at a time when the United States is witnessing an acceleration in the epidemic, with more than 160,000 people infected, of whom nearly 3,000 have died.

Later, a White House spokesman announced that the U.S. president had offered the Italian prime minister his "condolences to those who died in Italy" and "reaffirmed Washington's commitment" to working with Rome and other European partners and allies to end the epidemic.

On Sunday, Trump announced the extension of social spacing measures to curb the new Corona outbreak until the end of April.
